Abstract

Identification of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus infecting cowpea in Trinidad.

Abstract

An extensive survey of farmers' cowpea fields throughout Trinidad carried out in 2016 revealed plants showing symptoms of partial chlorotic yellow leaves, upward curling of leaves and reduced leaf area. On the basis of the symptomology, 50 samples were collected from 5 locations (Orange Grove, Aranguez, Valencia, Toruga and Maloney) and tested for infection with begomoviruses. The presence of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) was detected based on various molecular analyses. This is thought to be the first report of TYLCV infecting cowpea in Trinidad.
