Abstract

First report of Alternaria alternata causing leaf spot of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) in China.

Abstract

In July 2013, a severe leaf blight of fennel was observed in Shunyi County, Beijing, China. Disease incidence across the fields (approximately 2 ha) was about 40%. Initial symptoms included small spots on leaves and as the disease progressed, dark brown irregular spots appeared at the leaf apex, both at seedling and adult stages. The causal pathogen was identified as Alternaria alternata based on cultural, morphological, genetic (ITS) and pathogenicity analyses. This is thought to be the first report of leaf spot caused by A. alternata on fennel in China.
