Antioxidant activity of polysaccharides from starfish Asterias amurensis.
The polysaccharides P I and P II were extracted from starfish Asterias amurensis by hot water soxhlet extraction and alkaline percolation extraction method, and centrifuged, dialyzed and freeze-dried by TDA. The clearance of hydroxyl radicals (.OH), superoxide anion radical (O2-.) and DPPH. radical contents by the polysaccharides P I and P II was studied in vitro to evaluate antioxidant activity of the polysaccharides components from the starfish. It was found that the polysaccharides P I and P II showed certain clearance capacity of .OH, O2-. and DPPH. and the antioxidant activity was enhanced with the elevated polysaccharide concentrations. There were higher free radical clearance rate in the polysaccharide P I extracted by soxhlet method of hot water than in the polysaccharide P II extracted by alkaline percolation method.
