Abstract

The new toxin of Mediterranean:Tetrodotoxin.

Abstract

Mediterranean is exposed to intense impact of new lessepsian migrant species. The effects alien species are observed on native species, marine ecosystems and fisheries. However, the effects of pufferfish belongs family of Tetraodontidae is gaining more importance among allien species. Pufferfish contained one of the strongest marine toxins called tetrodotoxin (TTX), which becomes a threat to public health due to their TTX content. TTX is organic, non-protein structure, colorless and odorless toxin. The toxin is thermallystable and cannot be destroyed by temperature changes. In this review, the chemical structure of the toxin, features, history, biological origin, mechanism of action, poisoning and treatment methods, application fields of TTX, TTX levels of pufferfish species living in the Mediterranean are given.
