Abstract

Experiment screening the species of energy grass.

Abstract

During 2009-2011, six species of energy grass were introduced to 5 ecological regions of Guangxi Province, i.e., Nanning City, Lingyun County, Tiandeng County, Gongcheng County and Pubei County. The introduced species included Pennisetum purpureum cv. Red and Guimin, [P. purpureum cv. Mott×(Pennisetum americanum×P. purpureum)] cv. Guimu No.1, P. purpureum×Pennisetum typhoideum cv. Reyan No.4, and 2 domesticated Saccharum arundinaceum cv. Guimu No.008 and No.003. It was found that the six species could adapt to local ecological conditions, and grew rapidly. Guimin and Guimu No.1 had high dry matter production, and were 62 972.42 and 59 811.82 kg/ha., respectively. The domesticated species Guimu No.008, had a dry matter production of 19 913.96 kg/ha. In summary, the Guimin species, Guimu No.1 and Guimu No.008 had high fibre content, high energy, strong adaptability and high biomass production, so, they had wide prospects for use in Guangxi Province.
