Abstract

First report of Pepper mild mottle virus infecting chilli pepper in Pakistan.

Abstract

During the summers of 2013 and 2014, surveys were carried out to identify the major viruses infecting chilli (Capsicum annuum) crops in the Pothwar region of Pakistan. A total of 25 chilli pepper leaf samples showing symptoms of puckering and yellow or light green mottling were collected from stunted plants from different locations. Based on the results of PCR assay and nucleotide sequence analysis, the causal agent was identified as Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), which was further confirmed by BLAST and phylogenetic analysis. This is thought to be the first report of PMMoV infecting chilli pepper in Pakistan.
