First report of Alternaria alternata causing brown spot of Zizyphus jujuba in China.

Abstract

In 2012, spots tan to grey in the centre, surrounded by dark-brown to black margins were observed on leaves and fruits of jujube (Zizyphus jujuba [Ziziphus jujuba]) in Aksu, Xinjiang, China. In September 2013, the disease was reported in 30% of the surveyed jujube fields. Leaf and fruit samples were collected from symptomatic plants. Based on morphological characteristics, sequence analysis of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region and pathogenicity tests, the causal agent was identified as A. alternata. This is thought to be the first report of A. alternata on jujube in China.
