Abstract

First report of Pseudoperonospora cubensis causing downy mildew on Momordica balsamina and M. charantia in North Carolina.

Abstract

Cucurbit downy mildew (CDM) was observed on bitter melon (Momordica charantia) and balsam apple (M. balsamina) between August and October of 2013 in 6 North Carolina sentinel plots belonging to the CDM ipmPIPE programme. The causal pathogen was identified as Pseudoperonospora cubensis based on cultural, morphological, genetic (ITS) and pathogenicity analyses. This is thought to be the first report of P. cubensis infecting bitter melon and balsam apple in North Carolina, USA, in the field.
