Abstract

This commentary defines disturbance hydrology as 'an abrupt event that changes the previously understood hydrologic function of a system to a perceived negatively impacted state'. Also, the paper enumerates a number of topics for discussion in disturbance hydrology along with their impacts. The topics are: insect infestation, road construction, wildfire, dams, tropical storms, hydraulic fracturing, mining, tar sands, carbon capture/storage, tsunamis, forestry, invasive species, flooding, wind storms, earthquakes, and volcanic activity.
