Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Secure borders and the overseas engagements that protect agriculture.

Abstract

It is pointed out that a major source of benefits to Australia from ACIAR's agricultural R&D activities is in the sphere of biosecurity. Australian agriculture relies on the cultivation of a range of introduced species and while they are susceptible to diseases and pests, Australia remains free from several biological threats, such as foot and mouth disease. Some ACIAR programmes that deal with biosecurity threats are discussed, including those focused on animal disease prevention, plant disease prevention, and control of invasive fishery predators.
