Abstract

Puccinia heliconiae: causal agent of rust on heliconia cv. Golden Torch in Pará.

Abstract

In Benavides, Pará, Brazil, leaf samples of Heliconia psittacorum × H. spathocircinata cv. Golden Torch presenting high number of chlorotic oval spots with reddish-brown centres, which later coalesce to form lesions causing death of entire leaves were collected. On the abaxial side of the leaves, numerous pustules that are irregular in shape and brown in colour, were also observed. The causal organism was identified as Puccinia heliconiae based on cultural, morphological and pathogenicity tests. This is thought to be the first report of P. heliconiae on heliconias in Pará, Brazil.
