Germplasm status of minor and underutilized fruits of India.


This paper describes the genetic resource status of aonla (Emblica officinalis [Phyllanthus emblica]), bael (Aegle marmelos), ber (Ziziphus mauritiana), chironji (Buchanania lanzan), jamun (Syzygium cumini), karonda (Carissa spp.), ker (Capparis decidua), khirni (Manilkara hexandra), kokam (Garcinia spp.), lasora (Cordia spp.), mahua (Madhuca indica [M. longifolia]), phalsa (Grewia subinaequalis [G. asiatica]), pilu (Salvadora oleoides), pomegranate, tamarind and tendu (Diospyros melanoxylon). Urgent research is suggested on genetic resource management and improvement of minor and underutilised fruits to ensure the food and nutritional security of tribal and rural population and to enhance the income of farmers cultivating these fruits.
