Abstract

Native or invaders?

Abstract

This article describes the classification, size, habitat, reproduction, foraging behaviour and management of native (carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.), odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile) and pavement ants (Tetramorium caespitum)) and invasive (European red fire ant (Myrmica rubra), Hypoponera punctatissima, ghost ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum) and rover ants (Brachymyrmex depilis)) ants. The geographical distribution of invasive ants is also described. The management of ants is mostly chemical treatment that may include perimeter spray application and/or baits.
