Abstract

This paper focuses on the role of the Investigation and Diagnostic Centres and Response directorate (IDC and R) in providing field investigation, diagnostic testing and technical expertise with regard to new pests and diseases affecting plants and the environment in New Zealand, such as termites (Incisitermes minor) on imported goods from California, Black widow spiders (Latrodectus hesperus) on a boat from the USA and ash (Fraxinus sp.) leaf psyllid (Psyllopsis fraxinicola) in Wellington. The importance of the IDC and R in conducting surveillance and response functions and research and development to support surveillance and incursion response activities is also discussed.
