Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

First list of alien beetle species of Slovenia (Coleoptera).

Abstract

The first list of alien beetle species (Coleoptera) in Slovenia is presented. The list is a compilation of published and unpublished data, the latter mainly from reports and entomological collections. Currently the occurrence of 69 alien beetle species is known for Slovenia, in majority of Asian and North American provenience, but cosmopolitan species are also present in large proportion. The families with the greatest number of alien species in Slovenia are Curculionidae, Anobiidae and Nitidulidae, mostly synanthropic species. In the list the first year of species registration in Slovenia is given with an overview of unpublished data for selected species. Three species were recognized as top invasive species in Europe and are nowadays distributed already over whole territory of Slovenia: Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Diabrotica virgifera and Harmonia axyridis. Guidelines for further entomological studies of alien beetles in Slovenia are provided. The first alien beetle species list for Slovenia should serve as a baseline for further supplementations considering beetle neobiota of Slovenia.
