Abstract

Images in health surveillance: West Nile virus vectors and prevention.

Abstract

This paper describes the outbreaks of human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in the USA and the clinical features of the infection. The mosquito vectors of WNV (Culex quinquefasciatus, C. pipiens, C. tarsalis, Aedes albopictus and Ochlerotatus japonicus [A. japonicus]) and the prevention of WNV spread through vector control (elimination of breeding sites and use of microbial larvicides) and personal protective measures are discussed.
