Abstract

Invasive ant species.

Abstract

This paper presents some species of invasive ants (Pheidole megacephala, Linepithema humile, Wasmannia auropunctata, Anoplolepis gracilipes, Tapinoma melanocephalum, Monomorium pharaonis, Paratrechina longicornis, Nylanderia bourbonica, Technomyrmex difficilis, Tapinoma sessile, Dorymyrmex medeis, Nylanderia pubens, Myrmica rubra, Pachycondyla chinensis, Tetramorium tsushimae and Brachymyrmex patagonicus) and describes the traits (mainly behavioural and ecological) that make them ideally suited to survival in a new environment without any of their usual natural enemies. The management of these invasive species using insecticidal baits is briefly discussed.
