New records of ant species associated with Aphis pomi De Geer from Himachal Pradesh, India.

Abstract

In an investigation carried out in Himachal Pradesh, eight species of ants were found to have association with the green apple aphid, Aphis pomi De Geer, on apple. The species were; Camponotos dichorous (basalis) Forel, Camponotos nr. compressus (Fabricius), Camponotos sp., Lepisiota frauenfeldi Mayr, Meranoplus bicolor (Guerin-Meneville), Pheidole indica Mayr, Polyrhachis lactipennis Smith and Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius) and all were new records of aphid-ant association from Himachal Pradesh, India. The ant species were found to stimulate green apple aphid to produce more honeydew. The ant species exhibited guarding behaviour also and protected aphids from natural predators.
