Abstract

Conservation, evaluation and enhancement of wild lily germplasm in China.

Abstract

There are 55 species and 32 varieties in Lilium native to China, accounting for about 50% of the total species in the world. These wild lilies are distributed throughout 27 provinces excluding municipalities. A total of 41 species and 11 varieties including 14 exotic species and 7 varieties were collected and conserved in 7 institutes. 28 wild lilies were successfully introduced and cultivated in gardens and landscapes, and their propagation and cultivation techniques were summarized. The Chinese lilies exhibited significant genetic diversity evaluated by morphological, cytological and molecular markers, and the genetic relationship among some species were also revealed. Some wild lilies with resistance to diseases and insects and good ornamental traits were hybridized with species or varieties.
