Abstract

Record of mango mealybug, Rastrococcus iceryoides (Green) (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera) on Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre in Karnataka.

Abstract

The incidence of R. iceryoides in younger (2-5 years old) and older (more than 5 years old) plantations of P. pinnata in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, was studied. Nymphs and adults sucked the sap from leaves and sooty mould developed on the excreted honey dew. The extent of infestation was greater in younger plantations (23%) than in older plantations (8.0%). In severe cases, the leaves dried up, resulting in the defoliation of trees. This is thought to be the first report of R. iceryoides infestation on P. pinnata.
