Knowledge-based production and durability of innovative beech and grand fir wood-based panels.
The chemical composition of raw materials, intermediate and end products is essential for properties of wood-based panels. The results of the beech/grand fir project document that FTIR-ATR spectroscopy combined with FTIR-FPA microscopy depicts the spatial distribution of important chemical compounds and is able to quantify these compounds. This analytical method can be used to determine chemical modifications within the production process of wood composites and has the potential to be used for their knowledge-based production. The durability of innovative grand fir timber products against wood degrading fungi was analyzed using FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. This showed a high sensitivity of grand fir timber and timber products against brown rot but a good resistance towards white rot fungi.
