Dormancy overcoming in (Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morang.).
A laboratory experiment was conducted to develop an efficient method for overcoming the dormancy of orelha-de-negro (E. contortisiliquum) seeds. The treatments were: immersion in sulfuric acid for 15 minutes, immersion in hot water (80°C) for 30 seconds, immersion in acetone for 15 minutes, immersion in acetic acid for 15 minutes, and control. Seeds were allowed to germinate at 20-30°C in sand. The following parameters were evaluated: germination percentage, speed germination index, height of seedling, and length of root at 20 days after sowing. Immersion of seeds in sulfuric acid (95%) and acetone for 15 minutes was effective in overcoming the dormancy of orelha-de-negro seeds.
