Abstract

Absence of the parasitoid Orasema minutissima (Howard) in populations of the ant hormiga Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger) in south-west Colombia.

Abstract

In the present article we publish the results of the search for the parasite Orasema minutissima on native populations of Wasmannia auropunctata at south western Colombia. We sampled an area of 230 km. long and 10-20 km. wide, 1026 nests were evaluated and 20476 pupae were examined. In spite of a considerable sampling effort we did not find any O. minutissima specimens. The absence of the parasitic relation in previous studies with nests of the little fire ant in several locations in the same area of study, and the fact that there are no records of the parasitoid for the mainland of the country, agree with our findings.
