Abstract

European sturgeon... a come back?

Abstract

Thirty-five years of research work were necessary to prevent the disappearance of the largest diadromous fish of Western Europe, the European Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio. Fingerlings for restocking the last existing population of the Gironde River were obtained from juveniles acclimated in experimental stations. For the next phase the full restoration of European sturgeon in its natural range is anticipated with the implementation of indigenous wild population restocking programmes. This research programme has also generated the production of farmed sturgeon caviar using another introduced species in order to limit the level of fishing on wild stocks of the highly endangered sturgeon.
