Abstract

Antimicrobial properties of certain medicinal plants of northeast India on human pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract

Northeast India is endowed with rich flora and fauna. Many medicinal plants grown in this part of the country are reported to be used by the local inhabitants for treating various health related problems. In this preliminary investigation, 46 medicinal plants were screened for their antimicrobial/antibacterial properties against 10 bacterial strains using anti-microbial paper disc and agar cup diffusion methods. The study revealed 8 plants to possess anti-microbial properties against the tested bacterial strains. These plants include - Litsea glutinosa, Homalomena rubescens, Garcinia peduculata, Piper longum, Piper species, Pogostemon patchouli, Parthenium hysterophorus and Tephrosia purpurea. Of all the above tested plants, methanol extract of Piper sp showed the greatest zone of inhibition against S. aureus.
