Abstract

The introduction, evaluation and use of non-native conifer species in Britain. This paper focuses on the introduction of exotic conifers to the UK and the past and current importance of exotic conifers. The provenance testing of the most important conifers, such as Abies grandis, A. procera, Larix decidua, L. kaempferi, L. marschlinsii, Picea abies, Picea sitchensis, Pinus contorta, Pinus nigra, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata and Tsuga heterophylla, is highlighted and the natural distribution of non-native pacific north-west American species and European species are discussed. Further adaptation in the first generation conifers transferred from the Pacific north-west to Europe is also pointed out.
