Abstract

Isolation and identification of endophytic fungi in poplars.

Abstract

In a survey of endophytic fungi associated with healthy Populus spp. (P. deltoides Ă— P. deltoides, P. deltoides 'S307-26' and P. euramericana [P. canadensis]) in northern Jiangsu and Shandong provinces, China, 83 fungal strains were isolated from dormant buds, leaf scars, bark and ligneous tissues in the laboratory. The strains were classified, based on morphological characters, into 6 different species, 5 genera, 3 families and 3 orders. They were Alternaria alternata, A. tenuissima, Nigrospora sphaerica, Fusarium culmorum, Chaetomium globosum and Epicoccum purpurascens [E. nigrum]. These poplars are new hosts of the six fungi in China.
