Abstract

Pest control on ornamental Citrus plants in central Italy.

Abstract

Research was conducted at nurseries in Pistoia, Italy, where cultivations of potted ornamental citrus plants are very widespread. Potted citrus are grown in greenhouses all year long or placed outside during summer. Two species of Coccoidea, Icerya purchasi and Planococcus citri, and two species of Lepidoptera, Prays citri and Phyllocnistis citrella are the key-pests. Their life cycle is reported together with biological and integrated control strategies. Moreover other species, which infest citrus ornamental nurseries occasionally, were studied, i.e. the eriophyid Aculops pelekassi, the white flies Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Aleurothrixus floccosus, the scale Aonidiella aurantii, the thrips Frankliniella occidentalis and the flea beetle Luperomorpha nigripennis.
