Abstract

Performance of turmeric (Curcuma longa) under shade of tree species.

Abstract

Turmeric was grown under the shade of 25 tree species during 2003-05 in Arunachal Pradesh, India. The highest yield of 10.98 t/ha was obtained under the shade of the following species: Pinus wallichiana, Terminalia myriocarpa, Mesua ferrea, Bombax ceiba, Altingia excelsa and Phoebe goalparensis. The chlorophyll content was higher in leaves during the start of winter under the shade of Pinus kesiya (39.92), under a light intensity of 41 500 lux at 10.00 h; and 26 333 lux at 14.00 h. The highest curcumin, oil and oleoresin contents in rhizomes were obtained under the shade of Cinnamomum camphora, Cunninghamia lanceolata and M. ferrea, respectively.
