Abstract

First report of Phytophthora palmivora, causal agent of black pod, on cacao in Puerto Rico.

Abstract

This paper describes the first report of P. palmivora on cacao [cocoa] in Puerto Rico. Symptoms were observed during May 2005. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rRNA gene cluster was amplified, purified and sequenced for all 8 isolates. The ITS sequences of GenBank Accession Nos. DQ987915-DQ987922 were identical and showed strong similarity with those of previously identified P. palmivora isolates from cacao (AF228097, AF467093 and AF467089).
