Obligatory control of the red palm weevil.
Threat presented by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) to monumental ornamental palms in historical towns in Sicily, Italy, is discussed. A decree was adopted for obligatory control of R. ferrugineus on various palm species, such as Phoenix canariensis, P. dactylifera and Cocos nucifera. Strategies of pest control are outlined, such as installation of systems of pheromone traps, elimination of heavily infested palms and eradication of infested plant material. A research project was initiated to study genetic origins of the weevils using molecular markers.
