Abstract

This guidebook provides brief descriptions of over 500 species of european moth (Lepidoptera, Heterocera), as well as basic information on their biology, geographical distribution, host plants and flight-times. Small maps are given for most species, with the 78 colour plates depicting the great majority of the Arctiidae, Sphingidae, Lasiocampidae, Saturniidae, Endromiidae, Lemoniidae, Bombycidae, Drepanidae, Axiidae, Limacodidae, Notodontidae, Lymantriidae, Brahmaeidae, Castniidae, Heterogynidae, Somabrachyidae, Cossidae, Hepialidae and Thyrididae. Line drawings of genitalia highlighting certain characters and structures are provided for some difficult taxa. Three new species are described, namely Cilix algirica, Heterogynis valdeblorensis and Heterogynis pravieli. Several introduced species are listed, most notably Paysandisia archon, Acharia apicalis and Euclea vericrux.
