Insect pest status of vegetable crops in Western Uttar Pradesh.

Abstract

Field surveys were conducted for three years (2001-03) to record the pest status of vegetable crops in western Uttar Pradesh, India. Among the herbivores, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and Thysanoptera were the predominant insect orders. Cotton jassid (Amrasca biguttula biguttula) on okra; fruitfly (Bactrocera cucurbitae) on cucurbits; shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) on aubergine; cabbage butterfly (Pieris brassicae) on cole crops [Brassicaceae]; pea leaf miner (Phytomyza horticola [Chromatomyia horticola]) on pea; and fruit borer (Helicoverpa armigera) on tomato were the most serious pests in different vegetable crops in this region.
