Abstract

The identity and distribution of sugarcane and pasture spittlebugs (Homoptera: Cercopidae) in Costa Rica.

Abstract

Spittlebugs are important pests of sugarcane and introduced pasture grasses in Costa Rica and many other Latin American countries. In Costa Rica, 9 important species of spittlebugs were recorded: Aeneolamia albofasciata, A. contigua, A. lepidior, A. reducta, Prosapia plagiata, P. simulans, Zulia vilior, a species related to P. bicincta, and one related to P. plagiata. The geographical distribution and pest status of these species are discussed. This is thought to be the first overview and clarification of the taxonomy and distribution of these insects in Costa Rica.
