Abstract

Weeds as alternate host for Sarocladium oryzae.

Abstract

Various weed species in and around rice fields in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India, were grown in pots and inoculated with Sarocladium oryzae. Digitaria sanguinalis, Leersia hexandra, Eleusine indica, Echinochloa sp. and Setaria glauca [Setaria pumila] exhibited typical sheath rot symptoms induced by Sarocladium oryzae. Fourteen weed species in rice fields were evaluated as potential hosts for Sarocladium oryzae. Cyperus iria, C. rotundus, C. difformis, Fimbristylis miliacea, Saccharum spontaneum, Ischaemum rugosum and Echinochloa colona showed systemic infection, whereas Parthenium hysterophorus, Lagascea mollis and Phaseolus spp. exhibited local infection within 25 days after inoculation.
