Abstract

Biological control of tropical weeds: research opportunities in plant-herbivore interactions.

Abstract

Invasive exotic plants are a leading threat to intact forests on tropical islands. This paper discusses a promising tool in biological control of tropical weeds, the introduction of exotic host-specific arthropods or pathogens to reduce the abundance, rate of spread, and/or habitat distribution of the target plant in its invasive range. It is emphasized that the development of an effective biological control agents involves a great understanding of plant-herbivore interactions.
