Abstract

First report of Phoma exigua as a pathogen of salal (Gaultheria shallon) in British Columbia, Canada.

Abstract

A survey was conducted in British Columbia, Canada during the summer of 1999 to identify fungal pathogens of salal (G. shallon) that might serve as biological control agents. P. exigua isolate PCF2705 was observed to be pathogenic on salal. Morphological and molecular studies verified the identity of the species and inoculation studies confirmed its pathogenicity. This is thought to be the first report of P. exigua infecting salal.
