Abstract

Trees of Central America: a manual for extension workers.

Abstract

The manual, which is the result of a collaborative effort between various Central American organizations and programmes, is arranged in 10 chapters and has 8 annexes. The first chapter contains 3 guides, the first describing how best to obtain information from the manual, the second outlining various communication aids for extension programmes, and the third providing the practical details of a hypothetical case study. Chapter 2 gives information on the climate and soil of the Central American region, and Chapter 3 discusses key factors for the execution of afforestation and natural regeneration programmes. Chapter 4 looks at forest products and their markets and commercialization, while Chapter 5 describes the management of natural forests - an attractive option for the production of limited resources. Chapter 6 moves on to discuss the establishment and management of trees in agroforestry systems, and Chapter 7 addresses the matter of small-scale forest plantations. Chapter 8 discusses the value of the diversity and quality of seeds in tree planting, and Chapter 9 how the species listed in the manual were selected. The final chapter provides detailed descriptions of 199 species; the information included covers uses and management, commercial opportunities, geographical distribution, silviculture and a general description. The annexes provide maps of forest types, lists of species by forest type, use type and management type, synonyms, common names, a glossary of terms and details of libraries and documentation centres and seed banks (seed sources) in Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The CD-ROM accompanying the book provides access to all the pages of the manual and search capabilities for synonyms, common names, key terms and key words from the collection of most of the 1500 cartoons that are free to use in extension and educational materials. The CD-ROM also enables the selection of species according to forest type, and use type and management type on farms.
