Molecular characterization of a phytoplasma associated with grassy shoot disease of sugarcane in India.
The phytoplasma associated with grassy shoot disease (GSD) of sugarcane cultivars CoS 91269 and CoSe 92423 collected in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India was identified using the nested PCR techniques. A 1.25 kbp DNA fragment encoding the phytoplasma 16S rRNA gene was consistently amplified by nested PCR. The infected samples of the 2 cultivars gave the same restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns with 2 restriction enzymes (Hae III and Rsa I) similar to that of other known sugarcane phytoplasmas. This is the first report on molecular characterization of phytoplasma associated with GSD of sugarcane in India.
