Abstract

Report of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin on mango stone weevil.

Abstract

A survey was initiated in November 2002 at Hessaraghatta, Bangalore, Karnataka, India to identify the natural enemies of the mango stem weevil (Sternochetus mangiferae). During the course of the survey in December 2002, a dead weevil infected by a pathogen was found. The fungus was isolated on Sabouraud dextrose agar medium, where it grew well and sporulated profusely. Morphological and pathogenicity analyses identified the pathogen as B. bassiana. During the course of the survey, approximately 150 weevils were collected, of which only one was found to be infected. Thus, the natural occurrence of B. bassiana on the mango stem weevil is <1%.
