Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Catalogue of new world grasses (Poaceae): III. Subfamilies Panicoideae, Aristidoideae, Arundinoideae, and Danthonioideae.

Abstract

The nomenclature, taxonomy, synonymy, original publications, type collections, secondary references using the accepted names, and distribution by country and Caribbean region within the New World are presented for taxa within the grass subfamilies: Panicoideae, Aristidoideae, Arundinoideae, and Danthonioideae. Taxonomic synonymy is presented for all taxa at all ranks (other than ranks applying to cultivated taxa) known to occur natively, naturalized or cultivated in the New World. In addition, data on introduced species are recorded. The work covers 10 986 mononomial, binomial, and trinomial names, which are denoted as; 1 - accepted, 2 - tentatively accepted, 3 - doubtful or dubious, and synonyms. The number of accepted genera is 119 (93 native, 26 introduced). The number of accepted or tentatively accepted species is 1613 (1465 native species); 314 are further separated into subspecific rank. Accepted names are additionally marked as cultivated (50 species) or introduced (148 species) to the region (North America, Mesoamerica and South America, from Greenland in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the south and including floristically related islands). Other works from the literature using the accepted names are cited. A classification of subfamilies Aristidoideae, Arundinoideae, Danthonioideae, and Panicoideae is presented. A new combination, Digitaria ciliaris var. rhachiseta (Henrard) A.S. Vega & Rúgolo, is made.
