Abstract

Interception of downy mildew (Peronospora manshurica) in introduced transgenic soybean (Glycine max) germplasm.

Abstract

During 1998-2001, a total of 359 samples from transgenic soyabean from the USA were processed for quarantine clearance. The seed samples were first examined for the presence of Peronospora manshurica oospore crust on the seed surface then subjected to washing test for the presence of inoculum (oospore) traces. Some of the seeds showed dull, milky white to light brown crusts on the seed surface. The microscopic samples showed the presence of hyaline to light brown masses and thick and smooth-walled oospores (32-42.5 mm in diameter) that is consistent with P. manshurica. A total of 141 samples (39.27%) of infected-transgenic soyabeans were intercepted.
