Calliandra calothyrsus: an agroforestry tree for the humid tropics.
This bulletin provides information on the taxonomy, reproductive biology and seed production, seed collection and propagation, utilization and management (for fodder, green manure, fuel, shade, land rehabilitation, and honey and shellac production), provenance trials, molecular analysis of variation, and conservation of Calliandra calothyrsus. In each chapter, the main findings are summarized into practical recommendations for improved use of C. calothyrsus. This species has particular relevance in the humid tropics and on acidic soils where other agroforestry trees perform poorly. It is primarily used outside its native range, in areas where high population density places pressure on limited land resources, and where agroforestry systems are being developed to maintain and sustain agricultural production.
