Abstract

An introduction to giant African snail Achatina fulica, its destructive ability and an attempt to control by using bait technique.

Abstract

Experiments were conducted in Uttar Pradesh, India [date not given] to evaluate the efficacy of different baits (wet wheat, gram, barley and corn flour) and insecticides (dichlorvos, malathion, trichlorfon and mexacarbate) against the giant African snail A. fulica. The baits were applied at concentrations of 5-10 g/snail while the insecticides were applied at concentrations of 1.2, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 mg/snail. The results showed that wet wheat flour was the best bait and dichlorvos was the most potent molluscicide. The bait mixed with dichlorvos provided more than 90% A. fulica mortality in less than 96 h.
