Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Investigations on biological control of two common weeds, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. (bermudagrass) and Cichorium intybus L. (common chicory) in Çukurova Region.

Abstract

Cynodon dactylon (bermudagrass) and Cichorium intybus (common chicory) are two of the main weeds in the Çukurova Region of Turkey. Distribution and density of these weeds, natural enemies as biological control agents on these weeds and their infestation rate were determined in this study. Drechslera cynodontis, Ustilago cynodontis, Puccinia cynodontis, and Fusarium poae as fungal pathogens and a specimen of Thripidae family were identified on C. dactylon. The fungal species Amerosporium concinnum, Erysiphe cichoracearum, Alternaria spp. and two species belonging to the Aphididae and Tetranychidae, respectively, were found on C. intybus. Host range and bioeffectiveness tests of two previously identified promising fungal species (A. concinnum and D. cynodontis) were carried out in this study.
