Abstract

Outbreaks of contagious agalactia in small ruminants in the Republic of Macedonia.

Abstract

In 1997 and 1998, severe outbreaks of contagious agalactia occurred in the Debar, involving almost 80% of flocks; and in 1999, there were two large outbreaks in the adjoining prefecture of Gostivar. Laboratory tests to identify the cause of these latest disease incidents via bacterial isolation and serology confirmed the presence of Mycoplasma agalactiae. The need for serological surveillance of the disease is proposed and possible control measures are briefly discussed.
