Abstract

Megastigmus transvaalensis (Hussey) (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) in California: methods of introduction and evidence of host shifting.

Abstract

Notes are given on the biology and distribution of seed-feeding species of the genus Megastigmus and the role of Rhus and Schinus as their host plants. Hypotheses are outlined for the centre of origin, host shifting and methods of distribution of M. transvaalensis. It is concluded that M. transvaalensis is an endemic widespread South African species that host-shafted from seeds of Rhus spp. into seeds of introduced Schinus.
