Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

The smut fungi on Saccharum and related grasses.

Abstract

The smut fungi on Saccharum and the related genera Erianthus, Imperata and Miscanthus, have been studied. On this group of grasses, 11 species of smut fungi are recognised including Sporisorium masseeanum sp. nov., described on Miscanthus capensis. Fourteen synonyms are proposed, including: Sphacelotheca nankinensis (type on Imperata arundinacea) and Sphacelotheca consimilis (type on Saccharum munja) which are Sporisorium kusanoi (type on Miscanthus sacchariflorus); Sphacelotheca papuae (type on Saccharum arundinaceum) which is Sporisorium microthelis (type on Saccharum asperum). Proposed new combinations are: Sporisorium assamicum, based on Sorosporium assamicum (type on 'Andropogon aciculatus Retz.'=misnamed Imperata cylindrica), Sporisorium kusanoi, based on Ustilago kusanoi (type on Miscanthus sacchariflorus), and Sporisorium microthelis, based on Ustilago microthelis (type on Erianthus asper=Saccharum asperum). Detailed descriptions, a compiled host-fungus list and a key to the smut fungi on Imperata, Miscanthus and Saccharum are provided.
