Abstract

Integration of aquaculture into the farming systems of the floodprone ecosystems of Bangladesh: an evaluation of adoption and impact.

Abstract

In 1990, the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute and ICLARM jointly initiated a five-year study on incorporating aquaculture into the farming systems of Bangladesh. This report presents the findings of a survey which was conducted at the end on the study at one of the five farming system research sites. Information is provided on: (i) socioeconomic profile of farmers ;(ii) characteristics of the ponds; (iii) status of aquaculture before research intervention; (iv) research intervention and impact (technology profile, adoption of aquaculture practices, impact on fish production and utilization, fish production costs and benefits, impact of incorporation of aquaculture on household income); (vi) impact of incorporating aquaculture on resource utilization; and (vii) farmers' perception regarding the incorporation of fish culture into the farming system.
