Abstract

Breeding sugar beet for virus resistance - Part 1. Virus diagnoses and their potential in breeding for virus resistance.

Abstract

Sugar beet viruses commonly occurring in the Czech Republic are briefly described and their effect on beet yield and sugar content are listed. The pathogens include beet mosaic virus, beet yellow virus, beet western yellow virus, beet necrotic yellow vein virus, as well as broad bean wilt virus and tomato bushy stunt virus. Beet leaf curl virus has been reported in east Bohemia. Basic virus detection methods are described, i.e. ELISA and electron microscopy, and criteria for the determination of sugar beet resistance against different viruses are discussed.
